Save On Reds, Whites, and Bluecoat Gin
Despite the time delay and knowing half the results ahead of time, Americans are riveted to their TVs (and laptops, and iPads, and smartphones…), watching Team USA duke it out in London at the XXX Summer Olympic Games.
An event this big calls for something a bit more substantial than a spot of tea; cheering for the Stars and Stripes means drinking nothing but some choice wines and spirits America has to offer.
Yup, this edition of the Winfield Flynn Wines & Spirits newsletter is dedicated to Team USA and features only bottles brewed right here in the US.
Red This red does Old Glory proud. The 2007 L’Ecole No. 41 is a Columbia Valley Merlot, rich, with a bold bouquet of cloves, spices, and nutmeg. While it starts with big, dark fruits like black cherry and blackberry, it finishes with hints of pepper, cocoa, and toast.
White For toasting the remarkable speed of our US athletes, nothing goes down faster than a great bottle of Viognier white wine. The favorite in this category: 2005 Pride Mountain Vineyards Viognier from Sonoma County. With a fruity, citrusy aroma, this engaging white has a lovely high, natural acidity that balances the fruit-forward nature of the wine.
Blue Bluecoat is an American Dry Gin made right in the birthplace of America: Philly. It makes us think of Rocky Balboa training for his epic matchups, just as our current contenders are duking it out in London right now. Distilled using organic juniper berries, this dry gin is some of the most flavorful, smooth gin we’ve ever tried. A gold medal winner for sure.
